The Drama and Ted Russell Center at
Carson-Newman University

Nurses are the backbone of the healthcare system.

With the addition of the Drama and Ted Russell Center, C-N can continue to build on its excellent reputation for educating nurses of high caliber in skill and care. This new building is a significant part of Carson-Newman’s strategic plan to advance our mission.

The Drama and Ted Russell Center is an opportunity to pursue God’s preferred future for East Tennessee and nursing professionals.

Drama and Ted Russell Center Health Sciences Building

There are many factors that drive the nursing shortage. Many schools are ill-equipped with outdated facilities, lack of budget, and equipment. This new facility enables C-N to more than double the current academic space, provide needed resources, and afford the opportunity to grow our programs to meet the needs of C-N students.

The Drama and Ted Russell Center provides the instructional facilities necessary for students to earn:

  • BSN – Traditional 4-year Degree Programs
  • MSN – Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)
  • MSN – Nurse Educator
  • Post – Master’s Certification: FNP
  • DNP – Doctorate of Nursing Practice (launching spring 2022)

Master Plan

With new classrooms, laboratories, and lecture halls — all equipped with the latest medical training technology — Carson-Newman’s nursing program can receive more nursing applicants than ever before.

The Center is dedicated to health science programs, providing students and faculty with three stories of state-of-the-art educational facilities. At 48,000 square feet, the Drama and Ted Russell Center houses…

  • 12 classrooms
  • 16 faculty offices
  • Administration suite with conference room, faculty workroom and open office space
  • 2 simulation labs with 10 hospital beds
  • 2 general skills labs
  • 4 health assessment labs
  • Food service on first level
  • Multiple student lounges and collaboration areas
  • Covered outdoor terrace

Adjacent to the historic campus quad, the Drama and Ted Russell Center is dedicated to promote the excellence and expansion of the nursing program.

1st Floor

Stately columns welcome students, faculty and visitors into the first floor of the Drama and Ted Russell Center. Once inside, a spacious lobby opens up possibilities for studying or project teamwork with a cafe and student lounge areas.

Side hallways lead to intimate learning centers where faculty and students can form mentoring relationships and large classrooms where faculty can present the latest medical science using cutting-edge educational technology.

Perhaps most importantly, the first floor boasts 10 hospital beds with state-of-the-art medical simulation technology. These simulated examination rooms are critical to give healthcare students hands-on experience in a safe learning environment.

2nd Floor

Ascending to the second floor, faculty and staff have access to private and collaborative workspaces that serve as command central for Carson-Newman’s health sciences programs. Students enjoy breakout spaces to meet with their peers, study, and advance in their projects.

An accentuating feature of the second floor is the two general skills labs which house the latest medical-grade equipment with which students can train. The second floor is complete with additional spaces for classroom instruction.

3rd Floor

The Drama and Ted Russell Center finishes at the third floor with more modern classrooms, study spaces, and student success areas such as a print center and breakout space. Besides more office space for health sciences program staff, the third floor boasts four health assessment labs allowing even more healthcare students to study the process of patient health screenings.

Finally, the third floor culminates with an inspiring view of the northern side of campus on the terrace. Here, students can read, study, or meet up with fellow students.
